DFG to fund Research Unit MikroSim

The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) has approved the establishment of the new Research Unit Multi-Sectoral Regional Microsimulation Model (MikroSim) in March 2018. Research Units enable researchers to pursue current and pressing issues in their research areas and to take innovative directions in their work. The maximum funding duration for Research Units is two periods of three years.

The Research Unit MikroSim will develop a simulation model on personal and household level that will enable a reliable prognosis of societal and infrastructural developments in Germany. This microsimulation model will incorporate detailed information on a regional level. Once the model has been built, first applications will focus on the demand for care (be it home care or outpatient care) and the integration of immigrants into the German labour market.

Researchers from Trier University, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) will participate in MikroSim. The principal investigators are spokesperson Prof. Dr. Ralf Münnich and Prof. Dr. Johannes Kopp (both Trier University), co-spokesperson Prof. Dr. Rainer Schnell and Prof. Dr. Petra Stein (both University of Duisburg-Essen), and Prof. Dr. Markus Zwick (Destatis).
